Beijing Draw Released [01 Oct 2011|03:06pm]

inthisskin1026
Andy is back on court after a good run at the US Open. He's playing next week at the China Open and was given the No. 6 seed. In the first round, he'll take on Kevin Anderson--which should make for a good match. If he gets through there, he'll play the winner of the Davydenko/Montanes match.

Looking at the rest of the draw, he's in No. 2 seed Monfils' quarter. The other seeds in that section are No. 4 Almagro and No. 7 Isner. Tsonga is the top seed after Djokovic pulled out of the tournament with an injury earlier in the week.

I'll post the first round schedule as soon as it's out.

An Interview With: Andy Roddick
Friday, September 9, 2011

Q. How would you sum that up?

ANDY RODDICK: It was quick. You know, obviously it was a combination of things that probably weren't gonna work out today. You know, it was evident pretty early that he was in full control of things.

Q. How bad was the leg? Looked like it tightened up on you.

ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, you know, it's tough playing a lot of matches regularly, but I had zero reserves. I didn't have any time to train this summer, so playing a tough match like yesterday I felt I played a four setter yesterday; I felt like I played six sets. Came out today and I just couldn't you know, I was trying to push up on serves, and I felt like I was falling over as opposed to pushing up. Just didn't have much.

An Interview With: Andy Roddick
Thursday, September 8, 2011

Q. Nice way to end this surreal couple of days, huh?

ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, for sure. Little weird.

Q. Talk about the experience a little bit. Obviously it was a strange start this morning with the court bubbling up, et cetera.

ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, I mean, today you couldn't do much. I looked down at one point and I saw like kind of like a little crack, and it had probably seven or eight nickel sized water drops on it, but it looked too perfectly placed. It almost looked like someone almost pored a little bit of water out. So I dried it off, played the next game, went back to play the point, and saw it was there again. That's when I realized that we had a problem.

US Open Round of 16 Results (Full) [08 Sep 2011|09:30am]

inthisskin1026
These are the final results--the match is finally over. I left all of the other updates below the cut because of the drama there this morning.

Collapse )

No, it wasn't rain that caused the latest delay. They did get on court, and play seemed to go well. But Andy noticed a crack behind one of the baselines that was letting water up through the court surface. They called out the tournament director and were taking a look at the issue. When they realized how serious a problem it was, both Andy and Ferrer agreed to head back to the locker room because it's not a quick solution.

As of right now, I have no clue what the plan is with the match. I have posted the "results" of the couple games that got underway today, and I'll keep posting updates here as I did yesterday.

UPDATE

They worked at fixing the court and finally got the players back out around 12:30 local time. The first thing Andy did was go check the spot and noticed that the problem wasn't fixed and that water was still coming up. Things got a bit heated between Andy and the tournament director--with Andy clearly expressing his frustration that they had to come back out when the court wasn't ready (much along the same lines as the arguments that exploded yesterday). They all left the court, and the ESPN camera followed backstage. The tournament director got back on the phone and said they could move to Grandstand once the Murray/Young match finished up--given that Murray seemed to be completely dominating and in the third set--or they could go to the next biggest available court, Court 13. Immediately, Andy decides this is what he wants to do, Ferrer seemingly just goes along with it, and that's where they headed.

They had to get creative with the TV coverage--given that it's not a TV court--so I was only able to watch what they could give us on ESPN. (I'd been relying on ESPN3 online for everything with this match thus far because ESPN had to try to cover four huge matches all at once.) Another downside was that they didn't have the PointSteam stats for this match because it's only available for the three main show courts. They also had issues getting the live stats going in any form online for a while, so I missed the end of the first set and the start of the second. (Slight Update: The US Open website worked around the issues and were able to tap into the ESPN cameras and live stream the match.)

Hopefully, this will be the last update to this post until the match ends. If it does start raining or something again, I'll be sure to post that here.

This match is underway with Andy leading the first set 3-1 and about to serve. There is rain again in the forecast for tomorrow, but it sounds like they're anticipating more breaks between showers.

US Open Round of 16 Results (Partial) [07 Sep 2011|11:41am]

inthisskin1026
They finally got on court around 12:30 local time but only completed a couple games before the rain came back. It looks like this will be the pattern for the entire day, so keep checking back here for updates on the match. I'll update the score under the cut whenever possible, and I'll let everyone know once the match is finally completed.

UPDATE

At about 5:30 p.m. EST, they officially canceled all men's matches for the day--leaving the door open for the women's quarters to get underway. (I don't agree with that call; you'd think they'd want to get all round of 16 matches done before any quarters get going. But that's a different issue.)

That means Andy is stuck again in limbo. The schedule isn't out for tomorrow yet, but I'll post it as soon as it's there. It's looking like there's more rain in the picture--60 percent chance--but it sounds like they think there'll be time in between rain showers, which didn't happen at all today.

I'll start a new "results" post tomorrow as well.

Roddick vs. Ferrer
Wednesday, September 7
First match on Louis Armstrong Stadium (Starts no earlier than 11:00 a.m. local time and EST/3:00 p.m. GMT)
TV Schedule

Because of today's rain delay, they've got to cram in a ton of matches tomorrow. Because there are two men's quarterfinals matches scheduled, as well as all of the women's quarterfinals, they bumped Andy from Ashe to Armstrong.

I did see that there is rain in the forecast for tomorrow, too, but I don't think it's supposed to be as bad as today.

US Open Round of 16 Schedule Update [06 Sep 2011|11:52am]

inthisskin1026
Andy was scheduled for the first night match tonight for his match against Ferrer. But it's been raining all day in New York already, and they officially canceled play for all matches--both in the day and the night sessions.

A revised schedule isn't out yet, but they should issue one for tomorrow soon. They'll try to schedule all of today's matches, as well as all of the matches that would have been scheduled for tomorrow, so it's tough to know which court and what time Andy's match will be set for. Once it's out, I'll post the new schedule.

An Interview With Andy Roddick
Sunday, September 4, 2011

Q. We've been bothering you with what's been wrong with American tennis. We have four Americans making it to the second week for the first time since 2003. Tell us what's right about American tennis?

ANDY RODDICK: You guys are the experts. I don't know. It is a good thing to create I think there's a healthy jealousy going on right now, which is good. It's only good to help. If Donald Young sees Ryan Harrison play well in the summer, he's going to not want to fall behind. I think that's what you saw with that golden generation is that they were able to push each other. It's a great thing to see. You just feel there's a little bit of momentum. There is a bit of a snowball effect at times if it goes the right way. Seems like there's some of that right now. You're our voice. When people hear you guys talking about it positively, they come out and support, they believe, people believe, and it really does affect it. So thank you for your positive stories in the last week. No, seriously.

An Interview With: Andy Roddick
Friday, September 2, 2011

Q. Have you needed to play this kind of a match?

ANDY RODDICK: Define 'this kind of match' for me.

Q. As well as you played staying in points.

ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, I guess today staying in the points is a good thing. It's the way it works. You know, you haven't played, you work yourself in. All of a sudden one day you come out and things feel right. You don't have to force it. That's just the way it's always worked in tennis. That's the way it's always gonna work. Yeah, tonight I felt like the ball was doing whatever I wanted it to do for the most part. I was able to control it.

US Open First Round Post Match Interview Transcript [01 Sep 2011|11:10am]

An Interview With: Andy Roddick
Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Q. Were you pleased with the way you played? What were you frustrated by and what were you pleased with?

ANDY RODDICK: I'm pleased I won. The first two sets were all right. I kind of got myself into a hole. Was lucky I got out of the fourth set. I started serving better in the fourth set. But beyond that, you know, it wasn't pretty. I thought Mike was playing pretty well. You know, definitely had a strategy. Was trying to take the ball early, work lines, not let me get set. It's a good play if you can execute it, and he did it for a while.I got through it.
